FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) vessels have revolutionized the oil and gas industry by providing an efficient and versatile solution for offshore hydrocarbon production, storage and transfer.

These floating structures play a critical role in the oil and gas supply chain, enabling the exploitation of fields that would otherwise be difficult to access.

However, like any infrastructure in harsh marine environments, FPSOs face constant challenges in terms of maintenance and repair.

What are FPSO vessels?

An FPSO is a floating unit designed to receive, store and transfer crude oil and natural gas extracted from subsea reservoirs. This technology combines the functions of a production platform and a storage facility on a single vessel, reducing costs and operational complexity.

FPSOs are equipped with hydrocarbon processing systems, storage facilities and transfer equipment for loading oil and gas onto tankers.

Why is FPSO vessel maintenance important?

There are three main reasons, why it is of outstanding importance to have systematized the maintenance and repair operations of these ships:

  • The first reason is because they are structures that are operating continuously, which translates into a greater probability of wear and damage that can be caused.
  • The second is for the activity they perform: the extraction, storage and transport of hydrocarbons. It therefore means that these emanate vapors that generate explosive atmospheres, and therefore the possibility of leading to serious accidents.
  • Ultimately, and in relation to the second point, these accidents entail, in addition to costs in human lives, environmental damage to the marine environment.

FPSO vessel maintenance: What to consider?

As we have seen in the previous point, one of the main risks that exist in the activity carried out by FPSO vessels are the presence of Explosive Atmospheres.

Consequently, this detail must be taken into account when performing the relevant MRO operations. Therefore, here are some considerations to keep in mind:

  • Specialized Equipment: Operators must use equipment specifically designed for use in hazardous areas, such as  non-sparking tools and duly certified intrinsically safe equipment, thus ensuring that they are using, with total certainty, means manufactured for these purposes, as is the case with BAM certificates.
  • Certifications and Training: It is essential that maintenance personnel are aware of the risks that exist in FPSO vessels, and the catastrophic consequences that arise if they do not carry out proper maintenance.
  • Ignition Source Control: Strict control of ignition sources must be carried out, including the prohibition of non-intrinsically safe electronic devices and the implementation of grounding systems.
  • Rigorous Planning: Every maintenance task must be carefully planned, including risk assessment and implementation of control measures.

Therefore, the maintenance and repair of FPSO vessels are essential to ensure the safety of operators, avoid environmental damage, and contribute to the continuity of the economic activity of these structures.

The presence of explosive atmospheres should already force us to assess the importance of investing in specialized equipment and giving workers adequate training.
