Risks of working in the mining industry
- Firedamp: is a typical gas found in underground coal mines, whose main component is methane, and which can generate explosive atmospheres.
- Injuries: Among other causes, explosive atmospheres lead to the risk of landslides and rockfalls that hit workers, causing injuries
- Electrocution
- Fires
- Falls in open mines
- Respiratory diseases such as:
- Silicosis: Caused by inhalation of crystalline silica
- COPD and lung cancer: caused by continuous exposure to asbestos (also known as asbestos), sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, among other gases.
There are many more risks, such as those of a biological type such as tuberculosis, which usually originates from silicosis.
In open-air mines there can also be a risk of contracting skin cancer, due to overexposure to ultraviolet rays.
