What are the risks of working in mines?

MINERÍA

Probably, the mining industry is experiencing a golden age thanks to the fact that, on the one hand, the skyrocketing price of raw materials is making some projects profitable, and on the other hand, the demand that implied (and will imply) the electrification of the car.

However, working in the mining sector involves coming into contact with dangerous substances and gases that can have a direct impact on the health of workers. And the demands to which they are exposed imply the need to work safely and efficiently.

Keep reading if you want to know the risks that exist, and the solutions we offer for the mining sector.

Risks of working in the mining industry

  • Firedamp: is a typical gas found in underground coal mines, whose main component is methane, and which can generate explosive atmospheres.

  • Injuries: Among other causes, explosive atmospheres lead to the risk of landslides and rockfalls that hit workers, causing injuries

  • Electrocution

  • Fires

  • Falls in open mines

  • Respiratory diseases such as:
    • Silicosis: Caused by inhalation of crystalline silica

    • COPD and lung cancer: caused by continuous exposure to asbestos (also known as asbestos), sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, among other gases.

There are many more risks, such as those of a biological type such as tuberculosis, which usually originates from silicosis.

In open-air mines there can also be a risk of contracting skin cancer, due to overexposure to ultraviolet rays.

And of course, risks related to ergonomics:

  • Physical overexertion that can lead to lumbar problems

  • Overload in the wrist-arm area

  • Hearing loss from noise
